To keep the wood from loosing its shine and to prevent it from splintering one will have to keep a few basic points about wood maintenance in mind. These are not some exceptional steps that will require professional help or, training; it is something that can be done simply on a daily basis or, as required.

The first important point to remember before installing hardwood flooring is to check the quality of wood. Maintenance becomes easier if the quality of the wood is good. Easy maintenance does not mean ‘no’ maintenance. Dust is the enemy of all kinds of floors and hardwood is no different. Keep dust away as much as possible by placing door mats at the entrance of the house and cleaning the shoes before stepping inside. For regular cleaning one can use electrostatic dust control mops, vacuum cleaners or brooms with soft bristles. Liquid spills should be avoided as much as possible. Wet mops should strictly be avoided as well. It will only add to the dullness of the timber flooring and make it weaker every passing day.

Furnitures are known to cause maximum damage to wooden floors. This happens mainly because of dragging chairs, tables or, other heavy items, and dents and scratches are inevitable consequences. Even walking with pencil heels can affect wooden floors adversely. All these factors should be borne in mind before installing timber in the house. To ensure lasting shine, one should get the floor polished every one to two years. This is considered the food of wood, and should never be ignored. If polishing is ignored for a long time them splintering is bound to happen and this is not a very desirable scene in the household. Covering your timber floor with rugs is a good idea but, one should avoid this for at least a month after installation. Timber takes a few weeks to harden completely and rugs may hamper this process.
